The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is an Orthodox service that, properly sung, displays an extraordinary character of prayerful piety and simplicity. Celebrated only during certain days of Great Lent, it is a Eucharistic celebration that is, at the same time, permeated with a Lenten austerity. Vladimir Gorbik works his magic once again with the superb men's choir of the Moscow Representation Church of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery (see also our catalog nos. B069, D132, and D139). Their singing, whether it is simple litany responses, psalm chanting with refrains, or more elaborate, composed hymns specific to this Liturgy, is well measured, restrained, yet wonderfully musical and filled with subtle expressive shadings and nuances. Likewise, the repertoire reflects the best traditions of the Moscow School and the hallowed traditions of the venerable Holy Trinity-St Sergius Monastery. This is liturgical art at its finest--masterful, yet transparent to the higher meaning and content of the prayerful texts. The beautiful accompanying booklet, which explains the service and comments on the musical selections, is in Russian and excellent idiomatic English.--V.M.
