This early disc (2001) by the Male Choir of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery Representation Church demonstrates why this choir can safely be called the finest men's choir currently in Russia. They sing a varied repertoire, ranging from Byzantine and Znamenny Chant, to compositions and arrangements by Kastalsky, Chesnokov, Gretchaninoff, and Rachmaninoff. The various styles are negotiated with extraordinary flexibility, and variety of tone color and dynamics, as the music demands. The interpretation of every piece is vivid, artistically unique, carefully thought through, yet completely appropriate to the sacred Orthodox style. The performance takes one's breath away by its beauty and subtlety, yet without overwhelming. The titles and introductory article are in Russian and English, but no text translation are given. This CD is an essential addition to any library of fine choral music.--V.M.
