Ippolitov-Ivanov was one of the most respected choral composers and musical pedagogues of his time. He was a student of Rimsky-Korsakov and a teacher of Chesnokov. His All-Night Vigil, composed in 1905, stands as a major link between Tchaikovsky's and Rachmaninoff's settings. Composed in a clear and elegant harmonic style, this work builds upon Tchaikovsky's elegant and rich choral writing, but is less demanding than Rachmaninoff's.
