School,” pioneered a new technique of composition using melodic motives (“chantlets”) of znamenny chant to create a heterophonic (as opposed to imitative) polyphony. Combining this with rich contrasts of choral color and texture, he produced a number of highly effective works that inspired an entire generation of Russian Orthodox composers and presaged such works as Rachmaninoff's All-Night Vigil.
