Archpriest Georgy Izvekov (1874-1937) was a gifted representative of the “New Russian Choral School,” whose music remains largely unknown. His Canon for the Nativity comprises eight short "Odes" that can be done in their entirety or excerpted. As a Russian Orthodox priest, he suffered much harassment from Communist authorities and was executed by firing squad in 1937. Now he is the only composer to be numbered among the sainted New Martyrs of Russia.
