Great Canon of St. Andrew - Tuesday (CD3 from "A Helper and Protector")
The Moscow Representation Church's ongoing series of recordings of complete services, e.g. Matins of Holy Friday (B69b), the Liturgy of Pre-Sanctified Gifts (B117), and now the Great Compline with the Penitential Canon of St Andrew of Crete--complete, as served on the first four days of Great Lent in the Orthodox Church--fulfills several important purposes: 1) it offers the rare opportunity to hear these services in their complete, unabridged monastic fullness; 2) it presents a model of extremely high quality that Orthodox choirs worldwide can emulate; 3) it captures a living tradition of Russian Orthodox worship in sound documents of extraordinary value. It's the next best thing to being there. The present set of 5 CDs was recorded live at Lenten services celebrated in 2002; despite the usual challenges of live recording, the fine singing of the choir, filling the resonant ambience of the church, comes across admirably. As with all releases by the Representation Church label, the beautiful bi-lingual booklet in Russian and English presents essential information about the service and the music; no text translation is given, however.--V.M.
