A powerful, evocative piece well-suited to a choir with some muscle at the loud end, and control at the soft (and sopranos and tenors who can sustain high G's). Very exciting and dramatic with a wonderful dynamic range.
Taneyev, the Russian master of counterpoint, paints one of the most vivid and dramatic musical depictions of a glorious sunrise. In his book on choral conducting Chesnokov uses a passage from this work to illustrate his “registro-timbral” system in which 27 sub-sections of an 81-voice choir are deployed in a quasi-orchestral manner.
