On this album, the wonderfully fresh and brilliant-sounding Vesna (“Spring”) Children’s Choir of Moscow sings a variety of Russian Orthodox sacred pieces, from early chants to choral works of the early 20th-century Moscow School. The children demonstrate extraordinary musicality, clarity of diction, and subtlety of nuance, as they negotiate a variety of difficult and stylistically diverse pieces. Listening to these Russian children sing these sacred hymns, one rejoices at the fact that sacred singing in Russia has recovered after 75 years of Communist rule.--V.M.
