The women’s choir of the Precentors’ School at the Holy Trinity-St Sergius Theological Academy offers a wonderful selection of hymns to the Mother of God, of which the Orthodox tradition has a seemingly endless multitude. The singing of the choir is well-disciplined and musical, alternately subtle and sparkling. Clearly, this is a fruitful vineyard in which serious practitioners of the sacred choral art--many of them destined to become priests’ wives and parish choir directors--are cultivated. The beautiful CD booklet, in Russian and English, contains information about the Precentors’ School and its history. This CD will be enjoyed by all who love the pure, ethereal sonority of women’s voices and by all who wish to experience the richness of the Russian Orthodox devotion to the Virgin Mary.--V.M.
