The festal choir of the All-Merciful Savior Monastery in Yekaterinburg has had a fruitful partnership with the local musical arts organizations: one of their singers was the late Valery Kopanev, conductor of the Domestik Municipal Choir, who served as a choral trainer and consultant. As a result the monastic choir sings with excellent ensemble and tunefulness, unmatched by many other monastery choirs comprised primarily of monks. They sing chants with ison (a drone), which brings their singing close to Byzantine antecedents, and imparts to it a timeless feeling; indeed, the ison symbolizes eternity in ancient music theory. This CD is not to be missed by all serious lovers of Orthodox liturgical chant!--V.M.
