Taneyev's cycle of Twelve Choruses on Poems by Yakov Polonsky, opus 27, is written in the best traditions of Romantic-era Classicism (similar to Brahms). This chorus, No. 2 from the cycle, effectively employs contrapuntal writing and thematic development within a balanced form to paint a muted and subtle sound picture of mist falling at dusk.
