“O Be Joyful in the Lord” is a non-liturgical sacred concerto on verses selected, and in some instances paraphrased, from the Psalms. In church practice dating from the mid-17th century, such works were customarily performed at the Divine Liturgy immediately after the Communion Hymn, while the clergy were partaking of Communion.
