This CD is the second in a remarkable series of recordings that bring the sacred liturgical music of the Russian emigration back to its homeland, so to speak: fine church choirs in Russia and other neighboring republics (in this instance, Belarus) bring to life music that is by and large beyond the reach of most emigre choirs and therefore scarcely known. The small but well-balanced and well-tuned choir of the Joy of All Who Sorrow Church sings musically and with good ensemble, and do a fine job of introducing these interesting compositions and chant arrangements to the musical world. This recording demonstrates that, scattered over the entire world by winds of revolution and war, talented Russian composers continued to perpertuate some of the best traditions of liturgical singing of their suffering homeland, following in the footsteps of the great composers associated with the Moscow Synodal School of Church Singin--Kastalsky, Chesnokov, Smolensky, Nikolsky, and Rachmaninoff. The CD is accompanied by informative bi-lingual notes in Russian and English, which contain unique biographical information and rare photographs (some published for the first time), assembled for this project by Fr. Peter Perekrestov, the initiator of this project.--V.M.
