In recent years, the Representation Church (Metochion or Podvor'ye) of the Holy Trinity-St Sergius Monastery in Moscow has shown itself to be an exemplary center of Orthodox liturgical singing. (For stellar examples of this, see the recordings of its Men's Chorus under the direction of Vladimir Gorbik, our Cat. Nos. B069, B114, B116, B117, D132, D134, D139.) The present disc introduces another choral ensemble from the church--the Choir of the Sunday School. The fresh, young voices (SATB), about 24 voices strong, sing with fine ensemble, clear diction, impeccable intonation, and what may generally be described as a high level of vocal-choral culture. As a result, the simple and familiar melodies of the Memorial Service (Panihida) sound prayerful and transparent...as they are truly intended to be. This CD will prove to be a solace to all who love the common, standard Russian Orthodox Panihida; and it will be an inspiration to all who work in the church with children's voices, demonstrating a high standard of what's possible in a parish setting.--V.M.
