This 4-CD set contains the rendering of the Matins of Holy Friday--the so-called service of the "Twelve Gospels." This outstanding presentation comes close to capturing the experience of actually being there. The fine men's chorus of the Representation (Metochion) Church of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery is one of the best church choirs in Moscow. Musically and stylistically, they perpetuate the traditions established by Archimandrite Matthew (Mormyl), long-time choir direcdtor of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery, in which the entire service is melded into a single liturgical and artistic whole. This is Russian monastic choral singing in its most solemn and majestic form! The beautiful accompanying booklets in Russian and English offer helpful theological insights into the service.--V. M.
