Boris Ledkovsky (1894-1975) is one of the outstanding Russian émigré contributors to the Russian Orthodox sacred choral repertoire. As professor of liturgical music at St. Vladimir’s Theological Seminary and long-time choir director at the Russian Synod Cathedral in New York City, Ledkovsky left an indelible mark upon Orthodox music of the 20th century. With the fall of Communism in Russia, and especially as a result of the outstanding “Chants of the Russian Emigres” series, his music has become increasingly known in his Russian homeland, which he was forced to leave as a young man in the 1920s. The singing of the Choir of the Resurrection Church does justice to the composer’s music; their tone is clear and transparent and the nuances are subtle and flexible. This CD is not only an important document of Russian sacred music history, but provides an edifying listening experience for the Lenten and Paschal season. (Quantities limited.)
