Valery Kalistratov (1942-)
Valery Kalistratov (b. 1942) studied choral conducting with Boris Tevlin at the Moscow Conservatory, graduating in 1970. In 1974, he completed a second degree in composition at the same institution. Because his early training was in choral conducting, choral music naturally became Kalistratov’s primary medium, when he turned his efforts toward composition. He has written numerous cantatas and oratorios, shorter choral works and folk song arrangements, songs, music for children’s voices, and several orchestral and chamber works. He currently lives in Moscow with his wife, Anna Litvinenko, who is one of Russia’s finest folk singers. He frequently travels abroad to attend performances of his works or for appearances as a conductor.
