REVIEW
The selections from the main hymns of Divine Liturgy featured on this disc offer a rare insight into how the age-old chanting traditions as practiced on the Holy Mountain of Athos are being applied to some recent compositions in Byzantine chant style (at least one of the featured works dates from 1975, while others date from the 19th century). The Simonopetra Monastery has a reputation as being one of the centers of musical activity on the Mount Athos: it was here that the famous hymn of St Nectarios, "O Virgin Pure" (Agni Parthene) was originally composed. The singing of the monks is robust and full-voiced, which is characteristic of chanting in many parts of the Mediterranean world. The booklet gives the titles in Greek, English, and Russian, but not much more information than that.
